Celebrating the International Day of Clean Energy: Why Places Like The Green House Matter More Than Ever

The International Day of Clean Energy is more than a date on the calendar; it’s a global reminder that the way we power our lives shapes the future of our planet. It invites us to pause, look around, and ask a simple but urgent question: How can we meet our energy needs without costing the Earth?

Clean energy isn’t just about technology. It’s about people, fairness, and the world we want to leave behind.

Why Clean Energy Matters

Climate change is no longer a distant headline. It’s reshaping the world around us, from the weather we experience to the communities most vulnerable to its effects. A major driver of this change is our reliance on fossil fuels for electricity and heat.

The science is clear: to protect our planet, we must shift to energy sources that are clean, affordable, and sustainable.

But this transition is also about justice. Today, 666 million people still live without electricity, and more than 85% of them are in Sub‑Saharan Africa. Access to clean, reliable energy can transform lives, powering schools, hospitals, small businesses, and the opportunities that help communities thrive.

Clean energy goes hand in hand with energy efficiency. When we use less energy to achieve the same results, through better buildings, smarter appliances, or efficient transport, we cut pollution, save money, and help make sustainable energy accessible for everyone.

How Ethical Property Puts Clean Energy Into Practice

At Ethical Property, clean energy isn’t a buzzword. It’s a principle that guides how we design, operate, and improve our workspaces.

We share energy usage data openly,  both onsite and online, because transparency drives accountability. By showing where we’re succeeding and where we need to improve, we create a culture of continuous learning rather than quiet compromise.

Every year, our environmental performance is independently audited by leading specialists. It’s not a formality. It’s a commitment to ensuring our actions genuinely reflect our values.

Spotlight on The Green House, Bethnal Green

If you want to see our environmental ethos in action, look no further than The Green House in Bethnal Green, a workspace that’s green in name, design, and purpose.

Situated on Cambridge Heath Road in East London, The Green House is an award‑winning, fully serviced eco‑workspace that brings mission‑driven organisations together under one exceptionally sustainable roof. With a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, it stands as a benchmark for what responsible, future‑focused workspaces can be.

The building’s transformation is a story of innovation and respect for the environment. By recycling and refurbishing the existing concrete structure and harnessing its natural thermal mass we avoided unnecessary demolition and reduced carbon impact. The use of CLT (cross‑laminated timber) allowed us to expand the internal space to 50,000 sq ft while keeping the structure lightweight and sustainable.

Every detail serves a purpose:

  • A dynamic frontage that passively regulates noise, heat, sunlight, and ventilation
  • A services core at the rear to improve efficiency
  • A rooftop extension offering bright, airy workspaces with sweeping views of the city
  • A timber‑structured atrium with lime render that enhances lightness, breathability, and natural warmth
  • Curtain walling that further reduces the building’s carbon footprint

It’s no surprise The Green House won the AJ Retrofit Award for Office Project (2019). But awards aside, what truly defines the building is the community of changemakers who work within it, proving every day that sustainability and productivity can thrive together.

Small Actions, Big Impact

Clean energy alone won’t solve climate change, but it’s a powerful part of the solution and one we all have a role in. Whether it’s choosing renewable energy, reducing energy use, supporting sustainable businesses, or working in spaces designed with the planet in mind, every action contributes to a larger movement.

At Ethical Property, we believe impact comes in all shapes and sizes. When organisations, communities, and individuals unite with shared purpose, meaningful change becomes not just possible, it becomes inevitable.

On this International Day of Clean Energy, we’re proud to celebrate the progress being made, and even prouder to keep pushing forward; purpose & meaningful change becomes not only possible but inevitable.
